CLAIMING THE F-WORD: THINKING, WRITING, AND TALKING ABOUT FAITH ( STORIES & PROMPTS)

ABOUT THE BOOK
The title...
Before I settled on the title, I considered a handful
of other (softer) titles for this book. I felt the need to tiptoe around the
subject of faith even as I wrote a book that was meant to decrease the impulse
to dismiss, tiptoe around, or deny the subject. This cautiousness came
from my own negative experiences of faith as it was presented to me in the
Baptist church of my childhood. As an adult, the word faith seemed a bit pushy
or unreachable. That said, I hold a strong desire to claim this word and
experiences of faith as something positive. The truth is, my experience of
faith – that thing that no unloving preacher, no person, no dogma can change –
has always said, “This belongs to you. This is good. This is 100% light.”
Ultimately I chose a title that tips it’s hat at the baggage
attached to this topic while moving us into a position of mightiness and a
different way to consider faith.
The content and the purpose...
I love stories. I love stories about what it is to be a spiritual
being have a human experience. I love stories about the process, the journey,
the zigs and zags of life. I have been turning to books for a sense of
connection and solidarity since I was a little girl. In Claiming the F-Word,
I tell stories of what it has meant to me to exercise my faith muscle in
numerous ways. My stories are deeply personal, as honest as possible, and meant
to get you thinking, talking about, and claiming your unique stories of faith.
In addition to stories you'll find quotes and prompts to help you as well.
This book is a way to offer something back to the world as the
stories of others (in books, blog posts, articles, conversations) have offered
something to me.
Why do I care about this topic?
:: Because I know that faith matters.
:: Because I understand that faith is sacred.
:: Because faith is powerful.
:: Because faith can empower us during the ordinary and extraordinary
moments of our lives
:: Because let's face it - living in body/mind/spirit mode can be
tough without faith.
:: Because it's time.
